Stage-sync: An Artificial Intelligence system that makes all the representations of a work accessible.

The Stage-sync technology of the Softlab group at Carlos III University is unique in the world and allows fully automatic linking of what happens on stage in a theatrical performance with the accessibility elements for people with sensory disabilities (adapted subtitles, sign language and audiodescription).

It is a huge step forward, since until now it was necessary to have a technician present to control the rhythm of each performance, so the number of accessible performances of a work was limited. Stage-sync ensures complete coordination and control of what is happening on stage in a live performance, allowing all performances of a show to be accessible.

Stage-sync uses artificial intelligence techniques, deeplearning and advanced audio processing to know the precise timing of each performance, learning each time it is used, allowing you to improve its performance as it is used. Also, Stage-sync connects with augmented reality systems individually for each viewer, being able to enjoy the subtitles and sign language in a specially designed lectern, making the theatre that unique experience accessible to everyone.

Stage-sync is a system that allows to link what is happening on stage with the accessibility elements, it is no longer necessary to control the rhythm of the performance in each work, this increased the cost and made there were few accessible representations. Stage-sync is a system that collects everything that happens in the performance and with IA techniques is able to know at what point in time of the work is to send the accessibility elements to each viewer according to their needs in a fully automatic way.

App that makes available to the hearing impaired people a headset on their smartphones that amplify and equalize the outside sound. AudiSmart was developed with the support of Indra and Fundacion Universia. It was selected from a hundred projects submitted to the "I Convocatoria de ayudas a proyectos de investigación aplicada al desarrollo de tecnologías accesibles"

The main innovation of audiSmart is to make available to the hearing impaired a headset on your own Smartphone, not limited to a general amplification of the sound, but through specifically designed algorithms, as the background noise increases, the gain is gradually reduced to maintain production at a manageable level. After all, when the background is noisy, soft and loud sounds are masked, and the amplification only serves to make the noise more annoying. A high gain does not offer benefits in noisy situations. The system will effectively and customarily adjust the audio signal for the particular needs of each user.



Edutitling is a system that allows subtitling in real-time classes without the need for highly qualified personnel. Edutitling allows subtitles to be broadcasted on students' devices. EDUTitling allows the emission of any element of accessibility synchronized with the live event at low cost.

Once the accessibility elements have been started, they can be broadcasted in the room by different channels depending on their characteristics: text for subtitles, audio for audio description and video for sign language. Thanks to the high compatibility of the chosen formats, they can be accessed simultaneously from different devices by the audience: mobile phone, tablet, Smartphones, PDA, etc.

Therefore, EDUTitling is a tool that incorporates the necessary procedures to control even remotely, the synchronized projection of accessibility elements through the different channels associated with the room where the live class is in progress.

Cinema and Television

An accessible and low cost system for digital cinema and television that broadcast audio for audio-description, subtitle in several languages and sign language through WIFI. The system was successfully implemented in countries such as Spain, Colombia and Brazil. Whatscine has apps for Android and iOS. The software allows access to accessibility elements in and out the DCP, syncs via internet, syncs with marks in audio, synchronizes with an audio track on server with the audio of the movie on the user device. It allows multi and mono in cineplex, does not interfere with other viewers, promotes the autonomy of the person when using his own device, It is not necessary that cinema handle devices, including multilanguages, subtitles and audio description and sing language. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid transferred Whatscine technology to Whatscine SL.


Pervasive technology extracts captions from TV channels and sends it to users devices. Then the user can personalize and read even can use a braille display.

The system scans all the signals of TV broadcast and extracts captions that is sent to a cloud server after that. The server sends captions to the user's devices which are connected through bluetooth with their braille display.
