Who We Are?

The softlab group has been working since 2005 on accessibility technologies, mainly in the area of accessibility for people with sensory disabilities. The results of the researches are commercial systems that allow access to culture and education to people with sensory disabilities.

Our Director

Angel Garcia Crespo

Angel is the head of the SofLab Group at the Computer Science Department in the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the Head of the Institute for promotion of Innovation "Pedro Juan de Lastanosa". He hold his a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Award from the Instituto J.A. Artigas to the best thesis) and receive an Executive MBA from the Instituto de Empresa. Also He have led and actively contributed to large European Projects, and also in many business cooperations. He is the author of more than a hundred publications in conferences, journals and books, both Spanish and international.

  • He is currently leading the development team at Dicapta. He is one of the most recognized experts in captions and video description in the Hispanic world. Since 2006 has been responsible of the Social Responsibility program of CESyA (Spanish Center of Captioning and Audiodescription). Since 2011, he coordinates The Network for Accessibility, MELISA, created to promote and develop accessibility projects in Spain, Latin-America and the Caribbean.
  • He and his team was recognized with The Computer World Awards under the Human Services category. He was also awarded the CERMI Madrid (Prodis 2013) under the I+D+i category for innovation in accessibility for people with sensory isabilities. Dr. Garcia holds several patents related to accessibility in media and has been the inventor of technology to allow access to theatrical performances and movie theatres: WhatsCinema, UC3MTitling, and Titling, that are implemented in Spain, Brazil and Colombia.
